Noticed that Samsung is using Clean Master within its natve file manager app (My Files) to provide unnecesssry file cleanup. Curious as I always considered this ad-ware. The unnecessary files module simply provides the aggregate file size for "unnecessary" files and a Delete button. Would like to have the option to pick and choose which "unnecessary" files should be deleted. Does hitting the delete button give you this choice do all the files Samsung/Clean Master considers unnecessary just get deleted when you hit this button. Obviosly, for fear of the latter functionality, I have been reluctant to just throw caution to the wind and hit the delete button. Has anyone tried this?

When I use clean master app and uninstall an app, there's a pop up that appears that asks if I want to delete the files associated with that deleted app, I always tap yes for them to be cleaned. I just started using the smart manager on the S7 edge as the Verizon S6 did not have it installed. I believe the actual clean master app gives you the option to choose the unnecessary files you want to keep or delete but smart manager does not. It automatically knows what files are unnecessary and deletes them. As it deletes them, it will show you the ones that are being cleaned but you cannot choose. If you want more options or control, download the actual clean master app. I read that you mentioned the "my files" app for app manager but reading the rest of your post I gathered that you may have been referring to the smart manager. Kind of confused me a but but hopefully this answer helped.

Thanks, you are right regarding the smart manager vs. my files. I got mixed up because My Files gives you individual file sizes and usage, then there is the application manager within the settings for cache and data usage, and then smart manager within the settings for auto deleting what it considers "unnecessary" files. I was using all these tools to see where all my internal memory was evaporating from so got a little mixed up. Its hard to refer/navigate back to the phone applications when you are typing a forum post using the phone, Too bad that Smart Manager does not give you the choice to pick and choose because it would be nice not to have to install an additional app (that takes up internal storage) just to get rid of unnecessary data lol.

We'll never win the fight against trying to save internal storage lol.

To add to the confusion (or maybe not):

open the app File Manager (comes with the phone)
scroll down, look right for the button 'Clean junk', press it.

    Here you can clean:
    -stubborn junk
-number of caches (a summarized total, but also specified by type)
-add junk (again: a summarized total and specified by type)

Furthermore, top right has another button: 'advanced'. Most of the stuff here is obvious but i haven't really done anything here yet.
In this section, again there's a button on the top right, 'My Files'. It allows you to, well, find your files. Also, it shows 'app files' but again, i haven't really done anything here as of yet. So i don't quite know when files are being shown here or when to use this instead of the File Manager itself.

One final remark. Let's go all the way back to the File Manager where the button 'Clean junk' is. To the left of that button is a button 'PC File transfer'. I wish i had known about this when i was fiddling around with usb connections to put stuff like music on the S7 (I haven't found this trick online) because it's really handy. Example:

I have a pc that gets its internet through a ethernet cable. My phone connects with wifi to the same modem/router. I activate 'PC File Transfer', i open a browser on pc, and type the address and port that the app shows. I can now browse the phone from my pc browser (and transfer files). No need for third party apps (that sometimes have file size limitations)!

The only thing is: you must keep the app 'PC File Transfer' active on top. The service stops right away if you open another window on the phone (but it can immediately be started again, without having to open another browser window on the pc).

I'm not even going to attempt any of that lol. My goodness that was confusing. I have no idea where file manager is. What carrier do you have? Different carriers have different apps that are pre-loaded to their device model.

I don't yet have a carrier, and i assumed (for unknown reasons ) that File Manager would be on each phone. You can find it here if you're interested:

    play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.asus.filemanager

(I cannot post links so i removed the http)

BTW FWIW - the functions of Smart Manager CAN be accessed from My Files by pressing the the Storage Usage button at the bottom. I knew I got there from My Files somehow.
