This problem happened to me last Saturday and the AT&T customer service rep immediately knew what I was speaking about. Seems to be a very well known issue with his response.

Samsung better hope this don't happen to my 2 S7 edges and they give me the run around. I have 8 start phones and they are all notes or S7 edges, that 8 will go to zero.

They need to inspect the phone for dropped or water damage before denying warranty work.

Is there a possibility that dropping the phone without any noticeable damage can in fact detract from the phones claimed resistance to water?

The Water Resistance rating on this phone does not exclude it from water damage for warranty purposes.

I don't know if you understand how it works, but because something is water resistant doesn't mean it's water proof. This phone will take water damage if left underwater for more than 30 minutes or deeper than several meters.

There was a rather daft guy here once who wasn't listening to his physics class. His S7 was quite hot for multiple reasons (he was in Australia, heat wave season and played a lot on his phone). Obviously the heat will compromise the waterproof sealing, at least during the duration of the heat up, and he put the thing in a bowl of water to cool down and it got water damage.

The S7 is only water resist in a normal state with no previous drops that may have broken any part of the seal. That's why it's not really a guaranteed water resist.
