Swiftkey won't stay as the selected keyboard

This is with my wife's Note 2 but that's a pretty dead forum at this point so I thought I'd ask here as pretty much everything is the same in terms of the issue I'm having trouble with. I hope this is alright.

I've selected swiftkey as the default keyboard but the phone keeps going back to the stock samsung keyboard on its own. I've even tried to disable the Samsung keyboard in the App Manager and this doesn't work either.

Any ideas on how I can get swiftkey to stick?

If your phone is on Marshmallow, Settings -> Battery -> [menu at top right] -> Battery Optimization. Not Marshmallow? Then does not apply.

But, I don't think that would have anything to do with it.

Perhaps...

I've never used that particular phone so not sure what the right steps are. Try in settings - battery and search for an overflow menu (three dots, menu key). This seemed to work in other Samsung devices, for example here.

Also, it seems that SideSync needs the stock keyboard to work. Are you using it? If not maybe try disabling it.
