For the last five or six years, I've used an iPhone, and my wife and I still use MacBooks and iPads. My son-in-law has long been an Android user and advocate, and I decided to live "on the edge," and recently began using my new Samsung Galaxy 7S Edge.

There's a lot to like about it, but I'm still struggling a bit to wrap my feeble mind around some issues:

What is a "launcher?" I'm sure iPhone have something like it, and it's built in and you just live with it, while the Android platform give a user options. That's great, but I need to better understand their function, how to use them and where to start.

The launcher is the basic user interface. It is the screens with all the icons from which you "launch" an app. Most also have the ability to show the current time, weather, etc.

Most people use the default Google/Android launcher (currently, "Google Now") but lots of folks like third-party launchers, with Nova being a particular favorite.
