Difference between "fast charging" and "cable charging"?

Whenever I plug my phone in, sometimes it will trigger between charging at the option of "fast charging" (which obviously is much faster) or "cable charging" which lately almost drains my battery or charges at a very low rate of speed. Why does it toggle between these two options and what else are the differences?

My phone charger is old and the wiring is becoming broken down, so that's when I started noticing it doing it more too. I'm sure that has something to do with it. Thanks!

Well, that's a pretty solid indicator you need a new cable. Either the wires have bent and broken inside or the cable connector has been bent or worn enough that you need a new one. I've seen this multiple times as cables have aged, especially if it's an original.
