Edit: Forget everything I said... the auto camera/auto color profile in pro mode is indeed extremely accurate in daylight. Still a little too warm/green but not as severe as I expected. So that's cool. Still trying to decide if I want to use a custom profile or not. Just wish I didn't write a novel about it......

Beyond the "water resistance" the camera was the main selling point for me (my username doesn't reflect it but I am a professional sports photographer (MLB, NFL, NHL, NASL, college sports), & I immediately switched it to pro mode & was happy to stumble upon the two custom color profiles.

What a difference. Just got the phone today so haven't taken any photos beyond like soda cans, but I can't believe how bad the auto color profile is. Overly saturated (typical Samsung, but it looks good in some usages), but the main issue for me was the white balance.

Using auto everything: a white wall was of course yellow/orange.

Simply changing the white balance did not resolve this. This wasn't surprising since we're still in the days of the hardware/software being leagues behind actual cameras, and even my 6S Plus had white balance issues.

It may not have helped with it being a bathroom wall under antiquated non led lighting, but I'm so happy we have those color profiles to abuse, because after this experiment my S7 is on-par color wise with any of my actual cameras, whereas the 6S would've needed color correction (among typical things: contrast, sharpness etc.) after taking the photo (using the stock Camera app).

Anyway, that was a crap load of text in an image thread. I do apologize but I wanted to at least provide the setting values I'll be sticking with as they seem to be as accurate to real life color as possible.

Hopefully they work in daylight as it was midnight when I set the color profile & walked around the house comparing the on screen colors of objects to the real life colors lol - struggled with orange objects like cheese & the gatorade cap. Could not color match cheddar cheese, and would have to oversaturate & lose detail to get the proper deeper orange for the cap - while also destroying good balances for other colors. This issue even passed onto my skin tone which is warm/orange in real life under a bedroom light but displays as a dull white on the phone screen.

Needless to say this will not replace an actual camera but it's worth setting a color profile to get the best results it's capable of capturing with only minimal post processing/editing needed for share-worthy images.

I also recommend +.4 EV (this may change in daylight but daylight is 4 hours away so). The metering modes & focus options are never set in stone nor are the main manual controls so no point in writing another wall of text lol (apologies again, folks!)

Surprisingly, I did have to boost the saturation a touch to compensate for the less warm tones taken away by the color temp & tint change.

I’m just amazed how much detail shows up in the tiny condensation bubbles in the Gatorade bottle… I’m not a pixel peeper by any means but it’s impressive to see that detail zooming in with a non-macro shot (was like a foot or so away) compared to the “macro ability” of the 6S line. Can't wait to get out & start using this...

Really wish the quick launch cam could be set to pro mode though. I've already got the pro mode shortcut on the home screen so now I'll wait patiently for Samsung to hook us up (& fix the stupid raw setting turning off all the time... in my current 1 day of ownership lol)

Great information Pizzahhhhh. I would love it if maybe you created your own post with some of your other settings you use and what type of photos you are getting. I am always trying to find a good set up for pro mode or how to better my pro mode photos.

I'm glad the info was of use! I've ended up keeping the sliders where they are even for daylight usage.

The only other settings I'd recommend for more control would be using the raw mode for cleaner editing. I've not delved into that yet as I've only had the phone for a few days now, & switched from years of non-raw iOS, but will be looking into those options later today/this weekend. It'll be awesome if the Lightroom mobile app supports the raw files as that's what I use (the computer version) for all my sports work.

The shutter speed/iso/wb/af/ev/metering/af modes are all too variable to pick just one & leave it. I don't know if the WB will ever leave auto as the phone seems pretty accurate (once you modify the sliders to compensate for the overly warm tones), AF auto is fine since you have tap to focus for "manual AF".. unless it's super dark but I've yet to try focusing in dark environments.

Of course, some may prefer other settings or to leave the sliders as they come. I prefer/want/need as true to life as possible due to journalism ethics. Usually need to do minor edits after to correct exposure/highlights/shadows/contrast/sharpness, but unsure until I try the raw mode.

If you're shooting family/portraits/food/music/pets, etc, your sliders/filters will very well vary as you have more options to get creative, but if you want a clean realistic slate, the sliders are your best friend. There may be other camera apps that are more accurate with more functions, but I prefer the stock app & will keep my fingers crossed the double-click home button option will allow pro-mode someday (maybe there's an app to modify it without root.......)

However, I'd still usually use VSCO with a small amount of the K3 filter (love the Kodachrome tone) plus those same edits (exposure, etc.) in Instagram - but this version would not be used for news purposes. An earlier version of the photo would, as it had already gone through Photo Mechanic & Lightroom (no IG/VSCO filters) and sent off to be reviewed/edited/published.

I never bothered with attachment lenses for iPhones, but will probably look into them this time, specifically for wide angle usage, which I love... forces you to get close & intimate with your subject or provides a nice template for an environmental composition. Really like my new clear/soft case though so hopefully there's some compatible ones that don't force their own case (the Samsung one looks sick though).

The cameras in the Galaxy S6 phones put Samsung head-to-head with Apple in terms of image quality. Samsung's camera app is also faster, thanks to a combination of the ability to launch the app via the home button and lightning-quick autofocus. The camera on the iPhone 6S Plus is still excellent, and can even outperform the S7 camera in certain settings.

Interesting. Is it true about the 'over-sharpening' when you zoom into the photos? Trying to decide between the s7, s7 edge and the nexus 6p.

There is no difference between the S7 and S7 edge camera. The Nexus 6p is good but I give the edge to the S7 for sure

Lovely capture... I like seeing the beach so populated, there's too many empty beach sunset photos out there! (That awkward moment when I live in Tampa Bay.......)

Also guys, I'm late to the party & finally googled the stock messaging app MMS video/photo quality issues. I am very annoyed... coming from an iPhone where video messaging obviously works fine, & of course every previous android worked fine as well up to the Note 4.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr love the phone though, can't imagine switching to Note 5 to resolve.. love the S7E size coming from the 6SP......... & the magnet card swipe feature is to die for I keep using it at KFC & they lose their minds. Oh well, they'll prob fix it some day as it's such an embarrassing issue.
