I have recently switched back to an Android phone after going to an iPhone 6 Plus for a year. i totally love the iPhone camera quality. I wanted to get a GS7 after hearing about how good it is and the camera being top of the line. I was with a HTC One M7 before but got fed up with the phone hardware on Android phones. so now i have the GS7 and am disappointed in the camera lens quality. there is distortions with straight lines not being straight and when photographing lights in the dark the lens flare is awful. see here:
The first shots is with the iPhone 6+

Now with the GS7:

that being said I'm surprised no one else has complained about this. do i need a replacement or is the lens just crappy? I like the phone for the most part. And am glad to be on Android again. ;)

The larger aperture is more prone to lens flare. There is a give and take with everything. That being said, the quality of the S7 is waayyy better than the 6+ pics.

Lovely colours on the flowers. I would have liked to see a tighter crop on one of the flowers. I think 2 is my fav.

z06mike, there have been complaints of distortions of straight lines and the lens flare with lights.

Are these distortions in the middle of the frame or the extreme outer edges? Again, there is some give and take. The wider the lens the more "fisheye" you will see towards the outer ends of the frame. (Look at the super wide angle G5 pics as an example)

try looking at something with grid lines or the grid lines on the camera you'll see what i mean. with a grid it's pretty obvious. last time i had such distortions was in the 90's with cheap point n shoot cameras.

The first purple flower pic was with the S7 and with the phone just far enough from the flowers to get the shot (there is no cropping).
The second pic is with my Canon SX50 at full 50x optical zoom. Again, no cropping. I did have the Canon EC dialed down 2/3s of a stop. S7 is good and always with me but my dedicated camera still rules!

It's the fact you did drop the exposure that did it for me, gives a better tone across the photo.

I agree with you 100% that the S7 has a great camera but you can't beat a decent dedicated camera.

As crazy as it sounds, you could make arguments for both as to which is the better picture. Considering one of these is coming out of a phone shows just how far technology has come!!

I did and I really don't see what you are talking about? Are there faulty units out there? Absolutely! Out of millions of devices, some are bound to be defective. Can you post up some examples of your 1990s cheap point n shoot galaxy S7 photos as an example?

Oh I absolutely agree. In fact when I sent it to some friends I said I'm not sure that there is a clear winner between the two. I just personally prefer the darker one that came from my SX50 but I can see others preferring the lighter version.

I love having a great camera. Something that HTC seemed to fall short on with each flagship phone. Here are just a few pics I took with my new Edge!

A bunch of random shots I've taken with my Edge. Only thing I did was resize them.

Here's a Amsler Grid showing the distortions and the circle where the distortions is has a bluish tint. The outer part of the circle is the area that is prone to the purple flares as well. 20160525_183043.jpg
