How to put a call on hold

I frequently get scamming callers trying to talk to me, either offering "free" trips or saying the IRS is going to sue me. I know these calls are bull**** but instead of just hanging up and letting them go on to the next person, I would like to seem interested and ask to put them on hold only to have them waste their time. How can I put a call on hold and then still have full functionality of the phone (accept other calls, use the Internet, etc)? This would not only infuriate the scammers, it would slow them down from trying to mess with the next person.

How about just tapping the Mute button, then tapping Home and going about your business?
