Why does my s7 need me to use a pattern to turn it off ???

I have a problem with my phone as I have forgotten my pattern and i cant get on to it and all the ways to fix this say you have to turn it off first but I can't because I need the pattern to turn it off in the first place !!! Is there a fix for this please ??

That makes no sense to me. After several wrong pattern entries, are you not prompted to use your backup PIN?
