Well, it's heavier because there's more metal, more glass, a larger battery capacity and other stuff.

More of those = More mass

More mass = Heavier phone

Making the battery larger electrically and making sure that it has enough cooling to keep from catching fire can add a bit of weight. Or did you just want a Note 7 without the pen?

S8 is only 152g, this is lighter than the S7 Edge!

The S8+ on the other hand, while of course is larger, but not by much, is a massive 21g extra heavy at 173g.

Massive? You're talking a tiny difference. If it was moving at orbital speeds, then I could understand, but the difference in velocity reached from a three to four foot drop is minuscule.

Since the gravitational force is proportional to mass then neglecting air resistance all objects, irrespective of mass, fall at the same speed.

The effect of air resistance over that sort of velocity range will be negligible, but given that when falling face down rather than end of the S8+'s surface area is larger than the S8's by a greater factor than its mass is it's not at all impossible that the S8+ would fall (marginally) slower...
