I heard a lot of great things about how much better bt 5.0 is compared to the previous version, especially the range you can get. I tried using the same headphones that I used with my S7 Edge (Plantronics Fit) and noticed on the S8+ that the range is exactly the same. I walked from the bedroom to my front office room and I lose connection. Exactly the same as my Edge. I also just got the S3 Frontier, and it goes into standalone mode exactly the same distance away when used with the S7 Edge. So is there some kind of setting to boost the signal?

Are those headphones bluetooth 5.0? This won't be different without the device being compatible.

Bluetooth is like a box of chocolates, wait no it isn't. You need Bluetooth 5 devices to get Bluetooth 5 features. Whoda thunkit?

No, I wasn't sure about that. I thought the radio was stronger. I guess I missed the reviews talking about buying new bt headphones to take advantage of it. I'm assuming the set they are using in the promotion takes advantage of the new radio to show people what it's like, I would guess.

I was hoping I could get extended range with my Gear S2 while it stayed on charger (so smart lock would still work) but no difference unfortunately.

I figured the Gear S2 must not have BT 5.0 and that's the only way to see extended ranges.

So you got a new phone that has new tech inside it, but you use old tech and expect it to act different? If the old tech is at its limit, good luck...

I'm not disagreeing with you, I guess I was thinking the internal specs broadcasted a stronger signal. I'll just buy a new pair when companies release them. I heard you can pair to two different devices at the same time but I guess I'll wait to buy devices supporting this as well since you made a great point about why would new technology do special functionality with old technology.

Ok, honestly I thought the range was supposed to improve with all Bluetooth toys too. Kind of bummer to head the Samsung watch has no further distance.

I hope I can get away posting a video from a different Android site as this explains things very well about Bluetooth 5.0

Basically, the increased speed and 4x the range are not features that will function at the same time.

FYI, You can pair 2 devices simultaneously even if they are not Bluetooth 5.0. I have 2 Bluetooth 4.1 speakers that I am currently streaming to for music throughout my house. Theres a slight delay on the 2nd speaker but if they are in 2 different rooms it isnt a problem.

From what I heard the longer range with Bluetooth 5 is really only good for sensor type devices or smart watches. I read to get that longer range the data speed suffers greatly. Meaning even with Bluetooth 5 headphones, that greater range won't do us any good, as the transfer speed will drop too low to maintain quality audio
