I set a custom ringtone from a file in my music folder. Now I want to change sound for message notifications but it will ONLY show me the music folder. when I scroll back through the internal storage folders I can find ringtones but the folder is empty. How can I point to the default list of sounds so I can pick one???

I believe the Ringtones folder is for custom tones you'd download. However, I tried using MyFiles app to find the stock tones and searching in internal storage brings up nothing. Looking forward to an answer here also.

You may have set a default location for the ringtone picker and you'll need to clear defaults so you can choose the factory ringtones.

How do you reset the default location (clear defaults) to the factory ringtones? When I was first prompted, I unknowingly selected "file manager" and not "android system", and don't know how to get back to selecting "android system". I know what I need to do but don't know how to it. Thanks.

Chang 69 was "spot on". Just download "Zedge" from the google store and everything gets fixed! Problem solved!

Go to Settings -> Apps -> Drive (in my case I had choosen Drive) -> Set as default -> Clear Defaults.

Then you should be able to select app for ringtone again.

There is an app that is controlling the ringtone default folder. In this case and mine it was ES File Explorer. To clear this, goto Settings > APPS > Default apps > Set as default > ES File Folder. If there is a default set you will see the button CLEAR DEFAULTS. PRESS IT. Now you will see the Media file to see the stock ring tones. The personally added ringtones that are added to Internal memory > ringtones folder will appear in your ringtone list. The stock ringtones are not accessible without a 3rd party. But before you check do this first.

Do not let android set your DEFAULTS. I always like to choose the spefic app to do a task. As you back out go to DEFAULTS apps. Settings > APPS > Default apps > Default app selection > Ask before setting default apps. When I get the choice in apps to do a task I always answer Just Once and never Always. If you answer Always you will need to repeat step 1 and find the default app and clear it which is a pain unless this is your true default ie Gallery to view picts.A an example where you want a choice would be a "MEDIA PLAYER."
Thanks to the original posters which help me figured out what happened to my phone 😄

@Tinkertechie, idk what kind of phone you are using but on my Samsung S8 those options are not available. No where can I find an ES file folder. Nor does it pop up and ask just once or always anymore. And it may not be the phone, it may be the version of Android now. Either way I'm still having problems. I had downloaded zedge and then went into my msg settings. Somehow I had already clicked the phones ringtones and now I can't go into zedge to set a ringtone from there. Ugh. And I can't find a way. I've clicked always ask before setting defaults and I've even reset factory defaults and still can't. Help!!!!
