It won't cause screen burn in. AOD moves the screen image (clock, picture, infinity wallpaper, etc.) around every so often, specifically to prevent this. And unlike the home button, which moves around subtly, the AOD image moves quite a bit. Just check it out a few times throughout the day and you'll definitely notice this.
Yeah the little bit I used it I noticed it moving from near the top of the screen to the middle of the screen.

Yeah that's where I'm at. I just wave my hand over the screen when I want to check it.
I still prefer to be able to read my notifications from the lock screen instead of an tapping on an icon that makes me unlock the phone that takes me to the app.

AOD doesn't prevent you from being able to do that.

Uh for more battery life. AOD really drops the percentages fast.

I see no settings that allows for notifications to show as they did with AOD off. No matter what setting I chose, all it shows are the apps icons when there is a notification.

Double tap the home button and that will get you to the lock screen. You can also click the power button and that will also take you to the lock screen. That is no different than when your screen is off and no AOD.

I see what you are saying. I was thinking that there was a way to show notifications the way the phone did with AOD not activated. I'm still not interested in using AOD this way. I'll continue using my phone with AOD off.

I don't really use it. I was not sold on it when I had the 7, and I am not sold on it with the 8+. My other half uses it and loves it.
