Just got a galaxy s8 with the lifeproof fre case. Noticed immediately that the screen looks greasy with the screen protector on it. The whole screen looks evenly this way, similar to when you talk on the phone while sweating. It doesn't seem to be an "oil slick". It almost looks blurry, pixilated, or like bad 3d. I tried the remedies for the rainbow effect to no avail. I haven't seen any other complaints about this specifically and I'm almost starting to feel crazy.

Welcome to Android Central. Not familiar with that case but it sounds like the 'protector' just sits on top of the screen? If so then I would expect to see that same thing.

I tried to like the fre and like you, tried to fix the screen looking like an utter mess. Its good if you want something really protective but if screen quality is a concern, it fails miserably.

The best I could get it was putting a micro fiber cloth behind the phone to raise the screen closer to the protector. Eventually I returned it.

That "greasy screen" is the price you pay for not a water resistant phone, but a waterproof phone. The Lifeproof may be pricey, but it's protecting hundreds of dollars of phone from damage and moisture.

While I'd like something really protective, I'm not willing to sacrifice THAT much quality. I do a lot of editing on my phone and there's no way I can do it with the screen looking the way it does. My old cracked screen looks better. What case did you end up going with?

Spigen tough armor. It doesn't look like much but it earned my respect yesterday with a 4 foot fall onto a cement floor. No damage to the case or phone at all.

    No screen protector.

He may be protecting a pricey device, but what's the point if you can't enjoy the screen that you are paying for? I never understood this. People marvel at the looks of this thing and immediately slap on an ugly piece of plastic then complain that it doesn't look as good.

It's the case. I buy LifeProof cases every year for my devices and all of them have this effect.

To minimize it, use lens cleaning wipes (I like zeis wipes from Amazon) on the inside and outside of the case prior to install and use them on your phone as well. Other than that it's pretty much a natural effect of the case.
