Coming from an iPhone, if I had my iPhone on my desk, and received a new notification, I'd simply rest my finger on the home button.
The device would unlock and I'd check my notification. All this WITHOUT picking up the device.

With my newly purchased Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus (unlocked), with finger print scanner (FPS) enabled, am confused how I'd achieve something similar.

    Any ideas?

PS: Iris scanning doesn't work too well in this scenario...

I guess FPS might not work as the one in the iphone but the pressure sensitive home button in s8 might work similar to how you wanted.

The FPS is at the back, there is nothing you could do to have it the same way as your iPhone.

The only work around is to NOT use FPS when you are at your desk. For example, set it to unock by location, or by Bluetooth connection to something in your office like a speaker or Fitbit.

but the pressure sensitive home button
Welcome to Android Central. You also have option to use Smart Lock. Unless it's laying right in front of you you'll have to pick it up anyway.

From research, the long press on the 'home button', will work...

Yep, smart lock is the other option.

Smart lock works great for me at home or office. Just a long press to the button turns on the screen.

a different option than the fingerprint sensor, dunno how you feel about Bixby, but you can just ask Bixby to show my notifications, or read my notifications(if you want it read aloud. Bixby will even clear all notifications. all without touching the phone.
