S8 system ui stopped working at unlock screen

Now for the second time my new S8 running android 7.0 will not unlock unless I turn on the camera by double clicking the lock button. When i try to unlock my phone from the always on display the screen quickly alternates from always on to blank to rhe unlock screen. If i double click the power button the camera eventually turns on then I can tap the home button and unlock the phone. I tried clearing the system ui cache and also uninstalling the Google app updates. The last time this happened I finally had to reset the phone to make it work. I am hoping someone has a better plan?

Also I just tried safe mode and the problem doesn't seem to occurs there.
