    Using a Samsung S8:
I'm sure in the recent past I was able to unlock Banking Apps with its inbuilt 'Fingerprint unlock' option without having to have a lock on my phone. I can't for the life of me figure out how I did it. Now, the only way I can is by setting a lock on my phone.
    Any help appreciated.

Yeah I think it might be the banking app because before Oreo I was able to set up chase & Wells Fargo, but after I was only able to do chase. For some reason when i redownloaded the wf app it didn't ask if I cmwanted to set up the fp, but chase did.

Edit: I just figured out how to enable it on wf. You have to go into the app and turn it on. On nougat it asks you if you want it on your first time logging in.

I have never been able to use my fingerprint to open my banking app. That may be my bank's own security measure though.

Perhaps it is since the Oreo update that the problem has arisen. No, it's not the Apps, both give me the option to apply fingerprints - just that when I do that it also sets up the phone lock.
The banking Apps are UK based - Monzo & Nationwide.

It's not Oreo itself, either - the PNC app works (on a Pixel 2 running 8.1 - it worked on 8.0 also) with fingerprints (when it works - depositing a check crashes the app, then rerunning it has the login filled in and won't let you use the fp - but that's PNC's problem, they acknowledged it, promised to fix it last month, and I found a bank I'm always at anyway, so they lost a large account).

There has to be a tech support for online banking or maybe even for the Android app. Call them and ask. If not, Monzo is at help@monzo.com and the Nationwide Bank app I see on Play looks like the US one, so you'll have to look for it yourself.

TD Bank is for some reason not adding a fingerprint option to the app so I've been using lastpass

Correct me if in wrong, but wasn't there suppose to be support for fingerprint login on every app that needed a password natively on 8.0...?

This has nothing to do with Oreo and everything to do with your banking app. If there are issues, you need to contact the bank. If the bank can't offer what you need then you have to decide how important the feature you're requesting is to you. If the bank cannot provide the feature you need, you'll have to consider changing banks. Personally, like my bank app and am completely OK that they don't offer fingerprint sign in.

Thank you, really useful and helpful advice/suggestions.
I'll try the individual App providers for a solution but to be fair, happy with both and fp option isn't a 'deal breaker". It just annoys me that things that seem to be working just fine just suddenly change and no longer provide the beneficial feature. Having said that, my OkGoogle voice command worked fine for months and now it won't and the voice permission option on settings is greyed out! But that's another story for another day......
    Thank you all.

In the past I've just used the mobile version of the banking app + Samsung Pass as a mobile app. Fingerprint works and app performance is usually better. Hopefully chrome implements it soon and most banking websites become Progressive Web Apps.

    This is not true.

To log your fingerprints, you have to activate the fingerprint screen lock type. Once you have logged your fingerprints, if you try to change your screen lock type to swipe (i.e. non-secure screen lock type), you get the following message:

You won't be able to use your fingerprints to unlock your phone or verify your identity in apps.

If you want to use a non-secure screen lock type, removing your fingerprints is recommended, but you can keep them by protecting them with a password and restore them later when you switch back to a secure screen lock type.
That means you can't have both fingerprint ID for apps and a swipe (non-secure) screen lock type.

    Frustrating as hell.
