    Hi, I'm trying to recover pictures from a Samsung S8. The screen is broken and there is no display, the glass is shattered - it is completely black.

    I have tried to use the Samsung 300K Tool however when the phone is plugged into my Windows pc (Windows 7), and the 300K Tool recognises the connection;

    I click on the 'resistance' and it shows me that the phone is 'Samsung Mobile USB Modem' and that "Phone is in download mode now"

    If I go to the Device Manager on my pc, it shows the USB Modem location as Port_#0008.Hub_#0004.
    And if I navigate under Universal Serial Bus controllers, I have a listing for 'SAMSUNG Mobile USB CDC Composite Device.

    I know that the drivers are up to date and I have tried disabling the modem in Device Manager.

    I am assuming that the phone is acting as a modem and that this is why I cannot access the phone as a storage device to retrieve the folders and files.
    The phone doesn't show up under Computer where the drives are displayed at all, and I am not getting the dialogue box to explore the phone's files when I plug it in.

    Can anybody help me please? I've tried to find an answer online but because I have no screen display, I can't access the phone's settings to disable the modem from the phone.

    I'm not 100% sure how to use Odin to enable usb debugging and even if I could enable the usb debugging, using Odin, is that going to solve the issue of not being able to access the file system because of the phone acting as a modem?

    Please, if any one can help, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

    I’m not a Samsung user, but isn’t Kies used for data transfers?

    I’ll move this to S8, where they’ll know.

    It's not just the screen that's broken, if you've rebooted the phone at least once before trying to recover files, it appears that there's no OS in the phone. Your pictures may be in there, but since you can't boot a boot.img file, you can't find out.

    Check on Google Photos to see if your pictures are backed up. If they are, you can either download them, or just put the same Google account into a new phone and they'll sync.

    And no, you can't use Odin to enable debugging. Debugging is in the Android partition, not the bootloader partition (which is really what "Download mode" is).
