Isn't Google supposed to be open source? If so why isn't a safe version of the apk available in the playstore? I don't consider any apk from any other source safe.

Google is not open source. ASOP versions of Android are free. That doesn't include any of Google's proprietary apps like Maps or Music, etc. Manufacturers like Samsung, LG, and HTC are paying Google for Android. Why the hell would any company pay software developers to make the best camera software ever and then give it away?

Why is ASOP free? Why is Linux free? Some things are free despite costing a lot to develop. The apk could be supported by ads like gmail which is also free. Open Office is also free.

I did misunderstand the nature of Google. I don't know why I thought it was open siurce.

It can be confusing, but Jerry's article a few weeks back clears it up a bit..

"That operating system on your phone uses two different things we all call Android to create the final package. There's Android as in the open source software that anyone can use, and it's what Samsung builds its operating system from. It's freely available and easy to ..."

"The second Android that Samsung uses is Android™. Notice the little trademark symbol. Google owns Android™ when you're talking about software, but they license it to other companies as long as they meet a set of rules governing its usage..."

So then doesn’t that make using the Goggle Camera apk a copyright violation ?

It works well enough. I use it mostly for close ups of actual people. I've only had it crash on me once or twice in 3 months. One issue is that video I recorded with it wasn't recognized properly by Samsung's gallery app (but I could play and use it in other apps just fine.)

Pinging this thread for any updates. Does your phone need to be rooted to install the APK? If yes, then it is a no-go for me. Any updated download sources? Thanks.

Not the version for the snapdragon variant. It seems to handle white balances better than stock camera (if that's even the appropriate term).

It doesn't nor will it ever work as well as it does on the, because that device doesn't have dual lenses. I wish Samsung would either stop with the gimmicks or execute them properly. Google does far better refining the hell out of it's software and getting the most from a single lens camera.

Yeah, so I downloaded the APK from the OneDrive folder provided earlier in this thread. While the camera app itself worked smoothly, I took a low light pic inside the house with it compared to the Samsung native camera app, and the Samsung camera app was far better. They seemed to have the same amount of exposure, but the Samsung camera app had far more detail when you zoomed in.

So I had seen this article on the interwebs and watched the video where the guy showed installing the APK from this link.

The interesting thing is, in the guys video he shows settings you can toggle that do not exist in the version downloaded from the OneDrive folder. Sooo, I downloaded the other APK which did have all of the settings (shown here in the video).

Great right? Nope, the camera app was seriously laggy, where it was changing the view of what the camera was looking at once every 5 seconds or more. I played with some different settings, choosing different phone profiles than what he selected in the video, but nothing worked. Uninstalled and am waiting for an updated APK to come along.
