I am creating a very simple Android app to allow seniors to keep in contact with friends and family via video chat. I would like for the device to start automatically, when it is plugged into a charger. This is important because we need the tablet to be on and connected as much as possible with the absolute minimum of user interaction. If the device has powered off because of low battery, the senior would need to press the power button after connecting to a power source. I would like to skip this step and start automatically to keep user interaction to the absolute minimum.

I can see that there are ways of doing this by rooting the device, however before I do that I was wondering if there is a simpler solution. I don’t think I have any need for a rooted device except for this requirement and I want to keep the setup process for the tablets as simple as possible as I hope to roll this out to multiple devices.

I am happy to look at a software solution. I will probably use Teamviewer for remote administration but could consider an alternative mobile device management solution if it fulfilled this requirement.

    Many thanks for your help.

IMO, I think it would be better to get something like the amazon show. or use a firetablet with the charging stand as a show. they were created to do what you want. they are always on.

however, to try to answer your question, check out google s-voice. It might be what you are looking for.

Thanks for your reply. I did think about the Show, Firetablet or even the Facebook Video device. The thing that stopped me was that I needed 4G connectivity because the users probably won't have broadband. We may also want to get a bunch of these devices and lend them out to people for a few weeks to test. I guess I could add a 4G mobile router into the mix, but it's just another moving part eh?

Thanks for your link to the Google Voice stuff. That will be useful when we want the users to do more complex things perhaps. I don't see how that helps me with the 'auto switch on after connecting to power' though - am I missing something? I'm pretty new to Android, so I may well be.

    Thanks again

Have you tried an iPad? I don't have one so I can't verify, but when I was trying to find a cell phone that would turn itself on when power was applied, an iPhone 7 was the only phone I had handy that would do that (various LG phones would not). Not a huge dataset, though.

P.S. I applaud what you are trying to do. We've been trying to get a foolproof setup for older relatives, and nothing comes close in terms of ease of use.

Thanks - yeah, I'm actually an iOS user myself but I didn't want to mention this on an Android site in fear of death threats! I'd like to use Android as I can more easily deploy and finance the operation. It seems such a simple ask?
