Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 - facing problem using Skype and other VoIP services

I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 (running Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2), but I have been facing problems while trying to voice-chat or video-chat through Skype. What is happening is, while making a call it does connect and I am able to talk, but after about 10 sec there is suddenly a long silent pause for 5 sec or so and then it resumes - but this pause repeats at every 10 sec interval or so & it is so irritating as I am unable to have a proper conversation. This problem persists while using other VoIP services such as Viber, Nymgo etc. too.

Initially I thought this problem was due to my WiFi signal being poor. However, when I tried using my friend's iPhone 5 to connect through Skype it works fine - no breaks or pauses, even video streams smoothly.

Can anyone advise me on what could be the reason for the problem I'm facing - I think it is definitely related to the Tab or Android OS - and how to fix the issue?
