Why is my battery level draining so fast but then goes back up without charging?

For the past few weeks, my battery level has been fluctuating big time. It will go from 100% to 1% in an hour then it will go up and down without being charged. It thought that maybe it was a battery or hardware issue until i noticed that it will stay on 1% for hours without shutting off. This can be a bit of an inconvenience as I'm a college student and use my tablet to take notes which is hard to do when the battery is at 1% and the screen brightness is all the way down. I haven't been able to find any kind of solution or forums on the subject. Am I the only one having this problem? Is there a fix?

If the tablet is very new, read the Conditioning section at The Care and Feeding of Lithium Polymer Batteries. If it's more than 6 months old and you run it down to the single digits of charge regularly, you need a new battery. Never let it get below 40% if you can help it. (Meaning once a month is too much.)
