How do i make a shortcut from an app ive downloaded

Are you sure the app hasn't already made a shortcut for you?
If I (Galaxy Note3/Android5) need a shortcut - I press on the app till the OS generates a shortcut and the screen becomes my home screen plus the other pages then move the press/shortcut to the page I want then release.
