My old, first gen Samsung Tablet goes to new pastures, to be used by another family member, mostly for reading and listening to music. It served me faithfully.

As of yesterday I am the proud owner of a brand new Galaxy Tab S model SM-T705W (ISP: Telus Canada). Titanium bronze. Gorgeous creature!

I am a pretty low-tech person, an ultra-senior.

I am trying to find the path that will ensure that all my downloads and/or transfers from other media such as my PC or memory cards, OverDrive, etc., specifically eBooks, music, documents, etc., are stored on the microSDHC card and not on the device storage.

I read in the e-manual how to initialise the card, but I am reluctant to start downloads and transfers without being sure that they will land on the card.

I would appreciate assistance from the forum. I received always support from the forum, whether with the first tablet, or with my Galaxy S4.

Ultra? Older than I am? You remember April 12, 1945? (I sort of do. For some reason, I can't remember May 8 or September 2.)

(On reading further down, maybe you don't, because we're on opposite sides of the ocean?)

Plug the TabS into your computer. You'll see two "folders" in the phone, Phone and Card. copy the things you want on the card to Card.

Downloads go to the /Download folder - in device storage (Phone). You have to manually copy thm to the card then, if the copy is good, delete them from /Download. (You can move them too, but if a move goes bad, you can be left with no file and have to download it again. If you copy it and it goes wrong, you can delete the bad copy and try again.)

Transfers, as I said, are things you do manually (don't depend on programs to get it right - some of them actually change the file as they transfer it), and you transfer the file to Card.

I received always support from the forum, whether with the first tablet, or with my Galaxy S4.

It's how we seniors, ultra or otherwise, keep our minds from turning into mud and mushrooms. You make us think and we stay young and smart.

Depending on the OS on your old device versus the OS on the Tab S. Google changed the STORAGE process as it related to external sd-cards. Now apps and even some data are restricted to INTERNAL memory. But music and pictures and video can be stored on the card. There was a Map app I tried and while it initially downloaded offline maps to Internal memory, their website had instructions on how to move it to an sdcard after it was downloaded.

And, this is another SENIOR with senior moments. I don't recall anything in 1945 (other than what I've read) but I might recall stuff from the next year!!!!!

Overdrive has an option in its settings to choose where the files go.

I managed to access via OverDrive a book which I used to read in Aldiko on the old tablet. OverDrive installed the book on its Bookshelf. I had another book (anybody here reads Italian: Cuore by Edmondo de Amicis?) which I have on pdf and Aldiko was able to open it... So, small successes...

I'll move onward cautiously, and use your suggestions.

It's a bummer that only half of the device memory is available, but I will cope!

And I want to add that the Samsung manual for the device is pretty useless. The manual for Galaxy S4 is much superior. (Yes, I read manuals...)

Okay, so I just ordered the S 8.4, and since the 32 gig was out of the budget I had to work with, I got the 16 gig + an SD card. Granted, on my Nexus 7 with 32 gig, I only used a TOTAL of 12 gigs, even with native apps, but if I put the Nook app on the tablet, the Nook app will have to be on the internal memory? Can the books be on internal or external (although I don't see how because they have to go into the Nook folder), and if they are on the SD card, would the Nook app be able to access them?

Some apps specifically allow you to store their data on the sdcard. Generally, book files are pretty small although if you have tons, that might make a difference.

I'm not sure about Android but sometimes you can mirror the folder structure on the external sdcard and could possibly move files to the same location on the card.

But I'm sure that there are some knowledgeable people here with answers.
