Can't access my Word documents

I loaded some Word documents on to my Galaxy Tab S2 yesterday via the SD card, but try as I might I can't seem to make the tablet recognize that they're available. If I try getting to them via Word it doesn't think there's anything there, and if I try to access the files via storage to click on them directly the tablet says there's nothing in the folder. What am I missing?

Also, when you saved it over to the device, is it a .doc(x) format?
