Decrease sensitivity of swipes

I often have a situation where I am trying to open an app on my home screen and, instead of registering taps, it registers tiny swipes (less than a centimeter). These swipes do not open the app I am trying to tap. This means that sometimes I have to tap the tablet as many as 5 times for it to open the app. I find this quite annoying, because I just want my calculator to open (for example).

Is there a way to decrease the sensitivity of swiping, or increase the threshold of a swipe? Or is there a better solution?
