Could someone explain what happened here? It seems that now I won't be able to manage tasks anymore...

Android has, since the beginning, managed resources dynamically. Task managers, while useful in Windows, are quite harmful to the smooth operation of Android devices.

I know, and I have experienced their "harm" a few times before. This one, on the other hand, is considerably better than others (it doesn't do any magic, and you can pick what to kill). Also, most apps it cannot kill itself, but rather acts as a shortcut to the app info thing so that you can force stop stuff. This particular app has saved me many times when certain apps went rogue (and yes, clean master sucks compared to this...).

Why is Android doing this to me? I like having control. There is no way I am rooting this thing until it is at least 2 years old. Is there a non-profit way around? I though that I had a right to control my device the way I wanted to.

If you have a rogue app - use the app manager to kill it. Unfortunately, Samsung removes the long-press homescreen shortcut to the app info section to do this quickly (my Pixel 2 XL on Oreo still has it).

At least since my Moto X (2013) I have not had any need for a 3rd-party app killer, nor battery saver for that matter. I haven't had any issues.
