Sounds about right. The October patch, however, seems to be rolling out (at least in the UK) since last week, so maybe you'll get that soon.

I'm fairly inxperienced with my Tab S3. How do you go about updates? Do they automatically appear?

Unless you disabled the option, yes. Usually when you're on WiFi (if you have a mobile data unit) if there's an update available, the tablet will notify you and you can choose to download/install or delay.

October 1, 2018 patch level update released in the last couple days. It installed automatically on my mom's Tab S3 overnight, I just tapped install on mine (I'm not doing automatic updates on mine, hers is set to). 400+ MB download (405 or 450, can't recall).

Yeah, don't expect updates often from Samsung, especially on a nearly-2 year old device, unfortunately.
Yeah right... And they just now decided to stupidly update the 2.5 year old SM-P580 Tab A 10.1 (it came with MARSHMALLOW) to Android 8.1 and Samsung Experience 9.5 recently! What is WRONG with Samsung putting a 2.5 year old tab from 2016 in front on the Tab S3 which cost me 105990 Serbian dinars (exactly €855 at the time, which translates to about $1050 when I last checked in fall 2017). The said Tab A only costs (according to GSMArena) €220! Such a shame that such a BEAST like Tab S3 doesn't get at least 8.1, while they updated an old device that is far far less powerful than my relatively decent Mediatek P20 powered phone!!

Re: Latest security patch levelLatest security patch level

December 1 patch is now available as of Jan 2019.

I was hoping we might regain some of our reserved memory that was lost in the October patch, but mine is still only 376 mgs. My Husband hasn't installed October yet & his reserved memory sits at 704 mgs. On the bright side, the December patch was smooth. :D Thanks @chemgeek for the heads up!

I am fairly pleased with the performance of my tab S3, but I'm reading various threads that the latest update slows down the performance. To this point I have not installed the latest update, and judging from what I've heard it's best not to, comments?
