The flip4 has to be open to use the phone?

Nope. You can initiate and take calls while the phone is off. That being said, part of the 'cool' of this phone is flicking the phone open to answer, and most impressively, snapping it closed with one hand to end them.

80s? We didn't have flip phones in the 80s. Even the 90s were those ugly brick phones without a color display, Motorola flip phones were popular in the early 2000's lmao

The 90's definitely had flip phones. They were big and mostly flip from the bottom, but still considered flip phones. Let's not forget Motorola release the first modern flip phone in the late 1990's. Until then we have this kind pictured below.making and receiving-screenshot_20220904-133005.jpg

My first cell phone was a Motorola flip phone... I was a little late to the game, I believe I got it in 1995. At the time it was one of the better flip phones available... back when Motorola was still the Cadillac of phones It was built like a tank... awesome phone, but a little too thick for pocket carry so it got the fancy leather case with the swivel on the back, and a belt holster lol. Sign of the times

I still have it in the closet with every other flip phone me and my wife have ever owned... last time I played with them they all still worked, grainy photo memories and all

    I miss those days sometimes...

That looks very similar to my first phone from back in 99, but I'm definitely in the camnp of not considering them a flip phone. I think you're right though that both Moto and Ericsson had some actual flip phones in the mid to late 90s... very much out of my ability to obtain back then though lol
