Something like the N8000 is a phone??? I assume the newer 10.1 and 12.2 notes are offered in unlocked world phone form overseas as well.

The definition of phone is related to the UI. Tablet UI is very different than phone UI even though they are running the same Android version.

I guess if you can install Gear Manager on it, you may try.

I was hoping someone has or will try that. The 12.2 Note phablet would make a nice pairing with the Gear S and meet most of my total computing needs between the two (otherwise I'm considering the Samsung Galaxy S5 K Zoom to pair with).

What model do you have? They come in 3G and LTE fully unlocked. Here are the specifications for the Samsung Galaxy Note 12.2 Pro LTE.

My guess is that is because you only have a data 12.2 (USA) and not a factory unlocked phablet model with phone internals. Can you make phone calls from your 12.2 or just surf the net?

Considering the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro full factory unlocked 12.2 PHABLET models P901 (3G) or P905 (LTE) and would like a definitive answer on its' proper pairing and remote connectivity ability before putting out that kind of $$$.

Also, will the P905 LTE model with 2100 fequency be enough to utilize LTE in the USA on AT&T?

Thinking of the Gear S and Note Pro 12.2 combo as a complete package for computing, and both home phone & cell phone needs. Note Pro sits at home (most of the time), while the Gear S travels with me.

    I thought AT&T LTE for USA was: 4G LTE AT&T 700/1700/1900/2100Mhz

    That comes from:

You are right. It is primary 700MHz, Verizon uses 800MHz. 1700 and 1900 are the secondary bands IIRC. Never heard of 2100 but with all the shuffling with T-Mobile and other carriers, 2100 is probably in the picture as well.

EDIT: from what I found so far, AT&T uses 700, 850, 1900, 1700/2100 for LTE. The 2100 must be combined with 1700 just like T-Mobile AWS 3G usage (one for download, one for upload).

It looks like the P901 & P905 will work in the USA, but only on the 3G GSM networks.

I had a N8000 10.1 when it came out, but the screen was too small to meet my needs (old man eyes). The 12.2 combined with its' factory Samsung keyboard looks interesting and may do the trick for me; laptop/tablet/phone all in one, plus pairing with Gear S because of KitKat OS (I hope?).

If anyone can confirm the Gear S fully functions with the P901/P905 please let me know. Thanks.

I am not sure if I can contribute to the discussion, but on a separate thread I was asking about a similar phone/tablet, the Tab 4 7.0 SN-T235Y, an international unlock that can make calls equivalent to 3g/4g on Tmobile and AT&T. However, during the scan pairing process of the Gear S, it didn't pick up, although my Gear 2 was fine. Yes, I was able to get the latest version of the Gear Manager. I wonder if Samsung will update their list of compatible devices with the Gear S as they did for the Galaxy Gear and Gear 2.

Does your tablet have the correct Android version V4? I think what my question boils down to is if the Samsung Gear S works on ANY phone that has the proper Android V4+ software?

I'm currently looking at the slick small (by today's standards) Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. It has the proper Android KitKat software just like the Phablets mention here, but no one can tell me if it will remote connect or not...

It will have to be Samsung products. Other brands are not supported (there is no way to support Samsung Account without a Samsung product and no way to join Samsung app store either). Although you can hack the software (Samsung Gear Manager) to make it work but it won't work completely. A lot features are limited to Samsung phones running Samsung firmware only.

My Tab 4.0 7" T235Y did have KitKat 4.4.2 out of the box, and I was able to update to the latest Gear Manager. It worked perfectly with my Gear 2, but can't even scan and pair with my Gear S, so I returned it, expecting in a few days the Galaxy W T255S, another 7" phablet but with better specs. See pic. Good luck with your Sony, but like foxbat said, not sure if it is even compatible.

Haven't purchased the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact yet, just for that reason. Also considering the Samsung Alpha, but they "down freatured" it when they down sized it. Too bad.

Hoping the S6 will look like the Alpha and come in different sizes with no down featuring; just a nice pocketable size option that is compatible with the Gear S.

I am also currently going through all the different options of a new phone or tablet I could pair with my Gear S. I'd love a very small phone, or a phablet/tablet to leave at home... Still undecided on this. I am just getting tired of my aging Note 2.
I asked Smsung on FB and they are unwilling to tell you anything except Galaxy device on Android 4.4 as a minimum. I bought the Wifi only Tab 7 for that reason, and it won't even find the Gear S. When I asked them again, they pointed me to the ATT list of devices, and when I told them that ATT would obviosuly only list the devices they sell, and none of the others, there was zero help from them.
I have been looking into the Alpha, which as Active said is not high end enough, into the smaller Tab S, which I don't like too much, and which seems to not be working anyway... and am now researching additional alternatives.

Anyhow, long story short, I am now researching compatiblity lists posted outside of the US, since they get a ton of devices that never see the US. I found the attached list of compatible devices on the German Tmo site, but would like to know if the Galaxy Core 2 dual sim that is available on amazon.com is also compatible. Would you believe that Samsung is not able to answer this simple question when asked?!
You can buy the Gear S directly from Samsung (unlocked I assume) in France and the UK. Narry a mention of compatibility or even the need of a specific phone on the French page, and on the UK support page, Samsung support either does not answer questions at all, yet leaves them visible and unanswered on the page, or gives out wrong info. Bizarre to say the least.
I love my Gear S to pieces, but find the unsupport Samsung offers for this device mindblowing.

ETA: The Italian Samsung site actually lists compatible devices (available in Italy):
Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Note 3 Neo, Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S5, Galaxy S5 mini, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S4 Active, Galaxy S4 mini, Galaxy S3, Galaxy S3 Neo, Galaxy Mega 6.3, Galaxy S4 zoom, Galaxy K zoom e Galaxy Alpha.

I had considered the K Zoom for a bit, but it's pretty large and heavy.

I'd say the Samsung Galaxy Core II would work, because the list above shows the Samsung Galaxy Core LTE (second phone listed) as compatible and the Core II is new; released June 2014.

You must be outside the USA. Neither of those phones 3G fequencies will work in USA, only their 2G, but at $150 with WiFi it might work for updates and the like.

ADDED: Might be worth waiting for THIS anouncement early next year. Hope they make in in a "same features" MINI form factor too.

No, I live in the US, which is why I looked on amazon.com for the Core LTE, and instead only found the Core 2. I was thinking the same as you: it should work, so I may try it, even though it does not have the 1700 band - neither does my current Note 2 (international version)...

Or maybe wait for the S6 or S6 mini. Sammy has always made lower spec'ed variations of their mini phones, though, so I am cautiously pessimistic that the S6 mini will be any different.
Maybe they will change their approach to smaller phones again, who knows....
