Japan has a WiFi-only Galaxy Gear S | MobileSyrup.com

One of the standout features of Samsung’s Gear S is that it has 3G-connectivity. Samsung is pushing the fact that this is a watch that doesn’t need your phone to do its job. You can go to the gym, take a walk, or have your phone die and still have the ability to receive calls or send texts from your wrist.

“The Samsung Gear S redefines the idea of the smart wearable and the culture of mobile communication. It will let consumers live a truly connected life anywhere, anytime.” Samsung said at the time of the watch’s launch.

However, it seems Samsung is keenly aware of the fact that not everyone values the ability to make calls with their watch, because it has a WiFi-only version, too. This model just launched in Japan where Android Authority notes that the Gear S is available on two carriers. Though one has the watch available with 3G connectivity, the other carrier, seems to have a WiFi-only version of the Gear S that lacks a SIM slot.

Though the existence of a WiFi-only Gear S seems to defeat the purpose of why the watch was created, it does appeal to those that balk at the idea of an entirely separate phone number and plan for your watch.

Personally, they only had a made a standalone and phone dependent. WiFi only seems silly, but it's the better option than paying for the cell radio if you have 0 plans to use it.
