You cannot buy the watch and get it running without syncing to a cellphone. It's designed to be a kind of satellite to your mobile. Once you've got it set up, there are a limited number of things the watch can do on the occasions you leave your phone behind: track your heart rate while exercising, play music stored on the phone, and of course, act as a watch. But you can't really connect the watch to the internet without a connection to a cellphone somewhere, via bluetooth, wifi, or -- in the case of 3g S2s -- the phone network.
