may i ask a question about the 3 g version of the gear s2 .
the 3 g version has it own 'phone number"
can i set up my samsung note 5 such that if a call or text comes to my note 5 it will alert me and i will be able to receive it on my 3g watch even if the watch and phone are miles apart

They most likely have to be in Bluetooth contact - which is a few feet.

Just got it, and yes you have to be within Bluetooth range in order for that to work.

The 3G variant of the S2 is capable of making and receiving calls and texts independent of a smartphone. Via it's cellular connection, it can operate in standalone mode. Services like NumberSync, Digits, and Google Voice allow sharing one number across multiple devices.

Old post, but some misinformation. If you wish to receive calls on your watch when not Bluetooth connected, just activate call forward from your watch or gear manager on your phone. Messages will automatically be received on your watch through remote connection, assuming the cell network is activated on the watch.
