Gear S3 & Android Auto issues

Dumb workaround I have been using... unplug my phone before killing the engine (or power to the head unit).

Got the same with my Skoda Superb 2016.
When disconnecting android auto. My gear S3 disconnects, and stays disconnected until I reconnect it in the gear app in my phone.

And Samsung blames Ford? Haha. Maybe it could be an android auto issue. But not Ford. I can see at least 5 different car brands having the issue, only in this thread.

Hey All,

I decided to try a "dumb workaround" like sdardoin recommended. I have a gear s3 frontier using with an s8+ Samsung. My radio is a pioneer 8100 nex and normally I connect it using a usb/usb-c cord this is what I did. First I turned off android auto option USE BLUETOOTH OFF. I start the car before connecting android auto, and I disconnect android auto before turning the car off. This keeps the watch connected at all times, I have tried this for a couple of days and it seems to work. If it works for anyone else please let me know.

This works for me, thank you!!! I have an AVH-4100 / Note 8 / Gear S3. In order to get it to work I had to wait until my phone is connected to my head unit with bluetooth before plugging in the USB cable, otherwise it disconnects immediately upon plugin of the cable.

Tests performed:
1. Turned on the car and plugged in the USB cable prior to the bluetooth connection being established to my AVH-4100. This resulted in the watch disconnecting as soon as the Note 8 bluetooth connection was made to the AVH-4100.

2. Turned on the car and waited for Note 8 to connect to bluetooth on the AVH-4100 then connected the USB cable. This kept my watch connection. I then turned off the car without disconnecting the cable first and my watch connection was lost, as expected.

3. Turned on the car and waited for Note 8 to connect to bluetooth on my stereo then connected the USB cable. This kept my watch connection. Disconnected the USB cable prior to turning off the car. This also kept my watch connection. Success!!! Now I just need to remember to do this.

I have a pioneer avh 4200 in my chevy trailblazer, a s8 and gear s3. same exact thing happening to me, as soon as my phone disconnects from android auto it disconnects and wont reconnect automatically, so its definitely not a ford/chevy/kia issue. its either an android auto issue, maybe, more likely a samsung issue, never happened to me with my old moto 360 watch...

I am having the inverse problem. I have a Note 8 and Gear S3. I have a Pioneer AVH-4200 and when I get into the truck and connect the Note 8 to Android Auto, the Gear S3 disconnects. I'm not sure if its the cable connection or Bluetooth connecting that's doing it. I've tried to disable the Bluetooth connection to the receiver and it still reconnects via Bluetooth when I connect the cable. I can get them both connected if I connect the car first, so that isn't an issue.

Anyone else having this?

I'll try this next time I'm in the car.

Same thing here. I just got my Note 8 and S3 using with a 2017 Audi A6.

I don't think it's a Samsung or automotive manufacturer issue. I'd say the blame lies on Google/AA. Had similar issues with my Google Pixel and LG Watch Sport in the same car.

AA could stand to use some tweaking.

Edit: I figured the disconnecting before shutting down workaround a while ago with my own testing but it's kind of inconvenient when you stop for gas or run in the convenience store for a minute.

TOTALLY Agree. Very annoying Android Auto issue for sure. Hope "they" fix this long standing bug...whoever "they" are.

I would like to try this but how would that be possible. Just started looking into this and this happens in my 2016 Chevy 1500.

I downloaded Automate from the Play Store and set up a flow to reconnect my Gear if it ever becomes disconnected.

Nice...How exactly did you set it up with Automate? What steps? And did you have that disconnect issue with AA and your Gear S3 before (like when you turn off your car and open your door while still connected via USB to your car)? - Thanks

like when you turn off your car and open your door while still connected via USB to your car

Exactly that.

Download this .flo file and import it into Automate. You will have to download a couple permissions plugins. It will tell you which ones.

Once imported, you will have to edit the flow to watch for your Gear instead of mine.
  1. Open the flow and tap the pencil at the top.
  2. Tap 'Flowchart'.
  3. Tap the first Bluetooth box.
  4. Tap 'Pick device...'
  5. Choose your Gear from the list.
  6. Do the same for the second Bluetooth box.

Any questions, let me know.

I have a similar issue with my ford sync. Whenever I connect my Note 8, my Gear S3 drops connection. I can go in manually with my phone and re-connect, but it drops a few minutes later.

With this Automate script in place, what happens if it really can't reconnect, like if you go to the gym and leave your phone in the car?

I'm glad it's not just me. have this on my ford fiesta (UK) and gear S3. obviously a bug - hope they get round to fixing it.
