I have the same issue today. I thought it is because I installed Facer software yesterday plus i activate the AOD on my gear. At first I thought it is because of AOD. So I set it off and restart my gear. Still have the same Issue. Then I deleted Facer software from both my S3 Gear and Note 9. Still the same issue.
Then what I did is unpair my gear from my Note 9 and pair it again in the Bluetooth menu. It works. No more blank screen or white line.
Oh, I am not sure whether this is related. But I reactive back the Samsung "Smart thing" menu in my Note 9 shortly after I pair my gear, because I recalled I somehow turn it off yesterday - the white thing that usually will always show on your notification screen.
