After Android 10 came to my Pixel 2, the batteries on both my phone and the Samsung Gear S3 were rapidly draining. Also, the Gear app crashed every time I tried to use it.

Samsung's official line is that the Gear app will not be updated until their phones get Android 10.

However, there is a solution. I found it on the Samsung Community Website. I followed the instructions, and everything is working again. I'm not so sure that the official line is correct because I noticed that one of the apps (I think the Gear S Plugin) updated last night, and the notes said it was to make it compatible with Android "Q" as they put it. That update came after I had gone through the solution steps, so I don't know if that would have solved the entire issue.

Briefly, uninstall all watch-related software from your phone. They don't automatically uninstall when you uninstall the Gear app. Factory reset the watch. Then go through the setup process.

First make a backup and then follow the steps here.
