Safe to remove Gmail app if I am running K9?

I have a Samsung Replenish running Leaf 0.2
I use K9 for my email. Is it necessary to also have the Gmail app installed? Between the two, they use almost 10 Mb of phone storage. Neither allows moving to SD. This phone has little internal storage, so every little bit helps.

I deleted my gmail app and have no issues. I am not running K9 but if you do you have problems you can always download gmail from the market.

I did and my phone first of hung,that is, so many applications started giving messages of force closing....and when i switched it off and switched on..it refused to come on or rather the manufaturers name " TECNO" displays and it remains like that. i did this because i had started using K9, and felt it was safe,so though i had titanium back up, i did not backup the gmail app...
I use a Tecno T1,gingerbread 2.3.6,MTK6577 phone..please ur help.
