Lost...how to use .roms?

Okay, my phone is rooted, and has been for some time now, I am using android 2.1 from the Nexus dump.

I see all these cool sounding .rom files like bugless beauty or something....how do I use these?

Do I boot to the recovery console and just load the rom from there?

Do I have to go back to 2.0.1 or can I use these roms from 2.1??

I've done a ton of reading but I just don't understand what they are talking about. I've been to alldroid.org and its just not clicking with me.

You download the Nandroid file, Place the file in your SD cards Nandroid folder,
Boot into Recovery, Wipe Data, Wipe Cache, Select Backup/Restore, Simple Nandroid Restore (Latest), Reboot.

You do not need to go back to 2.0.1 if loading a nandroid backup.

Your purchased/Free apps will all be downloadable from the market. You can also back them up using Astro and reload them as soon as your ROM loads.
