How do I use basic camera functions like cropping or auto editing on the Z3?

For all the hype about it being 20 MP, it sure takes crummy pix compared to either my Samsung Gal S Relay or my HTC myTouch 4G Slide, both 5 MP, and I never used any setting but Auto on those. Can't tell it where to focus or where to take the light meter reading by tapping screen; contrast with lights and darks seems way off in nighttime shots; some photos are blurry, including zoomed shots (wasn't in the habit of using zoom on phone cameras from past experience-- hence the cropping--but this one was supposed to be better). It also seems that the viewfinder image is not representative of the clarity of the resulting photo--some that seemed like they were unfocused in viewfinder turn out clear--confusing. Worst though is that the drop-down menu options don't include cropping or other simple editing tools...is there some new icon I am failing to recognize? Thanks.
