Welcome to Android Central! They might be in your Google+ Photo albums in the cloud (formerly known as Picasa), and are being synced to your Gallery or Photos app. Go to plus.google.com/photos on your computer browser and see if those photos are there.

    Ok, there are photos there.
So how do I stop them syncing to my phone?
That must be chewing through some bandwidth!

I don't think it uses up much bandwidth, because it's only syncing thumbnails, not the full size photos.

If you really want to, go to Settings/Accounts-Google/(your Google account) and uncheck Google+ Photos, Gallery, or Picasa.
