Gmail not correctly marking messages as read

when i go into gmail on my epic it shows all my messages as read. however, in the top left corner where the inbox icon is it shows 62 unread emails. also when i access gmail on a regular computer all the messages that are shown as read on the phone are unread on the website. any ideas how to get these two synced up correctly?

I had this problem before. What worked for me was to unsync gmail in accounts and sync settngs, then I uninstalled it.

When I reinstalled gmail and reactivated my sync it worked. Had this problem when switching ROMs or restoring from Titanium Backup.
