Well, I had hoped the Epic would get GB by 1 November, but it didn't.

I've had the NS4G for about 1 week now, and I thought I would post some of my opinions for those of you out there that may be considering an upgrade or outright switching to the NS4G because of any dissatisfaction with the Epic 4G.

Overall, I've been very pleased with the NS4G. I wouldn't say that the phone blows me away, but certainly I feel justified in making the switch and at this point would not go back to the E4G.

Look and Feel.
Winner - NS4G. This phone is very slick and smooth -- sometimes too smooth (slips out of my hand; fixed with a case). I loved the curve look and the firm plastic covering. Despite having a plastic look to it, it feels solid in my hands. Weighs less than the E4G. What I don't like about the NS4G is the fact that the microUSB port and headphone jack are at the bottom. Should be at the top IMO. I thought I would miss the keyboard from the E4G, but I realize that I used the keyboard infrequently when I did have the E4G, so I will adapt.

Phone.
Winner - NS4G. I really have noticed a difference in the clarity of calls. Others have noticed it as well. One person actually asked me if I got a new phone. I think the speaker, however, is better on the E4G.

Radio.
Winner - Tie. I get the same reception (dbms) with both phones. That's the most scientific I get. Wifi analyzer looks about the same as well. Maybe there is a difference. I can't see it.

Firmware.
Winner - NS4G. Has GB 2.3.7. Will get ICS. No debate there. Runs smoothly and effectively.

Battery.
Winner - NS4G. On stock, battery lasted 2-3x longer on idle alone. With ROMS/Kernels, battery life is consistently 16-20 hours.

Media.
Winner - E4G. I really miss the E4Gs camera and camera button. The picture quality of the E4G is better and the video quality is better. I don't expect this to be remedied by any upgrades to the NS4G.

Storage.
Winner - E4G. I guess they are equivalent when it comes to cloud storage, but the E4G has a microSD card. I previously was using a 32 GB microSD card for my music and videos. The NS4G has only 16 GB (really 15 GB) of storage. This is half, so I have to have most of my music on the cloud and have to move videos off the phone more regularly. If you're a media buff and like to keep it local, you might have trouble with the NS4G. Also, if you have a limit on the data (is Sprint there yet?), your constant downloading of music may add up.

Rooting.
Winner - NS4G. This phone was made for hacking (as Paul627g has said). Rooting the phone was very easy with one click root (I know, I'm lazy). What I like about the ACS one click root is that built into the one click root program is a one click UNroot program. Very nice. Bootloader is nice. CWM 5 on the phone right now. Rooting went without a hitch.

ROMS.
Winner - ??. Not sure here. This may be a matter of opinion. There seem to be some pretty good E4G ROMs out there, but there are also some great NS4G ROMs as well. Maybe not as many because the NS4G gets updated regularly or maybe because stock runs so well. Anyway, I'm on my second ROM for the NS4G right now, and both (Oxygen, Bugless Beast) have been awesome. Kernels are very slick too. Currently running matr1x 9.5.

Apps.
Winner - NS4G. No bloat. I know this can be removed with rooting and Titanium, but the NS4G doesn't come with all that garbage. So if you're one who doesn't want to root, you don't have to worry about it with the NS4G.

So, I think if you are a media person, you might want to stick with the E4G. If you are a person that uses your phone as a phone and for email/texting and media is secondary, the NS4G may be for you. If battery life is the primary concern, I think the NS4G is better.

Anyway, just my opinions. The phone is great, and I'm happy with the switch. Feel free to PM me if you have questions.:)

I had an epic 4g and just wasn't thrilled at all with it. Touchwiz IMHO is a resource hog and slows things down, the battery life was horrible, and lack of sammy updates. I jumped ship to the nexus and wouldn't look back. Unless you need a full keyboard I see no reason to stick with it. I get about a day and a half of medium to heavy use with the nexus. I'd be lucky to get 6 hours of that with the epic. That's just my two cents. Good luck

Great write up Kevin... You basically nailed it all right on the head....

As far as media is concerned and the camera, I think the Galaxy Nexus will fill the void in that department when it makes it to Sprint....

Otherwise, that's about it in a nutshell....

Nice write up... The fact that it doesn't have a a micro sd card is the killing point for me. I have a 32gb card and I keep it full of music. I could definitly fill a 64 gb card with my music alone. I mostly ride a motorcycle and use the phone as my only music player.

Kind of funny how far we have come... A few years ago 5/10 gig of memory was awesome for music... Now the standard is 32 gig.. I guess we as consumers have gotten a bit greedy... But I'm just as guilty as the next person.. LOL.

I had 4 GB in my treo, but I also could swap it out, had 1 4GB card for music, one for videos, etc.

16 is fine, I really don't need 4 GB of music and 9 GB of high res anime with me at all times. But I like to have it there, because I don't always have signal and my phone has been my media consumption for about 6 years now. :)

I was really concerned about the microSD card issue...so much that I almost got an Epic 4G Touch. I switched back to the NS4G at the 11th hour.

May rationale was that I wanted more of the reliability as a phone and email device, because that's how I primarily use the device. I'm getting used to listening to Google Music and Pandora more frequently. Besides...Google Music holds ALL my music...not just 32 GB of it.:)

Yes the battery on the NS4G regardless of stock or rooted is what so many people have wanted out of their Epic 4g but can't get. I'm convinced, its the UI overlay.. Its the TouchWiz, Sense, etc.. those UI overlays suck battery down and run extra processes and consume device resources that hurt the battery no matter what kernels or methods of battery saving you use.

I believe it. Maybe it's one (if not THE) reason why SimplyAOSP ROM for E4G lasted the longest.

Thanks for this thread. I've been thinking of moving to the NS4G.

For those with large memory cards, doesn't media scanning take forever on startup? I'm stock Epic.

Sure the larger card does take a bit longer to scan on boot up but I wouldn't think its anything outrageous.

As far as the 16 gb on board memory on the NS4G, well it is what it is... That is also why we have Google Cloud services now to help with storage. Drop box is a good option while on the go you can easily move stuff on and off your device using drop box. Really the only reason I see the memory being an issue is for video and music storage and then really do you need to carry your entire collection with you at all times? I know I get bored of the same old stuff and refresh my device and MP3 players quite often.

Yes I do need to carry my entire library with me as I no longer have a computer. I also feel no need to buy another one. :) I work all day long on a computer at work and the last thing I want to do when I get home is look at a computer so I will not replace it. I definitly need something with an sd card.

Valid enough...

I think we will have to put Keith up as one of the corner stones of the Samsung Epic 4g community... He has stood on his word from day one of staying stock, being happy from the most part and seems like he will continue to be well into the future..

Nothing wrong with that...

I do have one comment to make and its not singled at Keith by no means.....

How do people today get along without a computer?? Even with the quality of smart phones I still feel the need to jump on my laptop when it comes down to business of doing bills, research and other daily activities that just take too darn long on smart phones even with all their advanced bill payment integration apps and stuff...

I have 2 laptops (mine/wife) and 3 desktops (2 for kids/main desktop for network) and 3 cell phones (mine/wife/daughter) and don't know how we could do without it all.... Then again I'm a bit out of the normal with 5 kids too...

Bills? I only have 5 of them. I pay my mortgage and car on my computer at work (during lunch) the other 3 on my phone. Yeah I try to stay as debt free as possible. Just have one daughter and myself to worry about. I am pretty lucky in that my work is pretty easy on computer usage. On lunch and breaks you can do what you want on them as long as you don't go to porn sites.

There's your answer, laptops needed for pr0n. I wouldn't trust Lookout security for some of those sites... ;-)

That sounds a lot like a government computer. :)
