Using phonearena.com's comparison tool to compare the Epic with the EVO shift, and it indicates that the Shift supports WMV video playback but the Epic does not.

Is this in fact true? If yes, why is this so? Does it have something to do with the version of Android, or is it the phone itself?

It's just installed codecs. I think there are media players for Android that will play WMV (Rockplayer I believe does) and if there aren't now, VLC is coming soon.

in Astro file manager, I single-click on a WMV file and it says "file not supported" - but if I click and hold, then click "Open As" and click "Video", it plays just fine. Not sure if I got the video codec from some other app, but the video plays in the default player.
I would mark this one up as "Yes, supported" but YMMV.
