GN2 Gmail does not auto-load new messages or auto notify me of new messages anymore...

I have had the GN2 for Sprint since the day it came out - I have had no problems with it - but starting about 2 weeks ago - suddenly Gmail will not automatically download new incoming messages - I have to do a manual refresh in the app itself for it to get new messages. And the gmail notifications envelope no longer comes up at the top of my screen either. I thought this might be because the device is full of memory but it is not - it has 10GB free. Is there something I need to do to get it to start auto downloading messages again? Clear a cache somewhere or is there a setting inside of gmail that maybe I turned off by accident or something?? Please advise.

In the settings>google>click on you account and make sure gmail is checked
