So what does this mean?

Well, in all likelihood Sprint should begin to roll out the update to phones running stock EK02 shortly.(This is usually the pattern, may change)

If you are rooted and already running EL29 what does it mean?

~Nothing really.
Actually that isn't true. You should expect to see some more in depth modifications, roms, and kernels because developers will now have the source code to build off of.

Do you need to do anything?

~Nope, just sit back and wait.

What is changed?

~The big thing in this release is that sprint has officially removed Carrier IQ.
~Other than that, it is an upgrade to android 2.3.6 with various minor bug fixes(The last one before ICS)

Any questions?

Yeah looks like EL29 will be the final build. Other changes owners who take the OTA update will see is a small change to a couple of the icons and the dialer looks different. The dialer change is actually pretty nice.

I just rooted my phone but have not installed a mod, but I did make a few minor cosmetic changes. What will happen to my phone when it gets the update. Should I unroot it? This is new to me.

Thanks!

What kind of cosmetic changes and which method did you use to root?

I followed the instructions from this YouTube video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Be2evusAwOM&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Not sure what method this is?

I used an app called ROM Toolbox and just set 'superuser' after the root. And also changed my battery icon and wifi icon (it's now a green color) up in the task bar if that is what is called that top info you always see.

That's all I changed.

I only needed superuser so I could run my backup using Titanium Pro Backup.

Thanks!

Rob

Did you install clockworkmod as part of that? Are the cosmetic changes reversible?

Clockwork mod, no I don't think so.

What would I have gotten with that mod?

How can I find out?

But I doubt it, I just did that root for superuser, and those two cosmetic changes.

I did make a backup so I guess I can undo it.

Android is so much different than WebOS!

PS I just checked and for some reason the Sprint update is not available to me yet? Any reason why? Was it pushed out to everyone?

The update has not pushed out but it really shouldn't be much longer.

Clockworkmod, is a custom recovery installed used to make back ups and flash custom modifications. My bet is if you don't know if you installed it you probably didn't. One way to check is to power off then power on holding the vol up and power botton, does it boot to recovery or clockwork? Just hold the power button 10 seconds to restart.

As for the mods you made as long as you can reverse them or restore a backup via that app you should be fine.

Did you remove any stock applications?

I got a problem!

I can't get it to go into recovery mode!

I press the volume up hold that in, then press the power button and hold that.

I've done this before?

Is it possible to have disabled that key combo?

Well, I got into recovery mode.

It booted into Clockwork!

While I was in there I did another full backup.

So does this mean I have all the stock ROM on the phone or the clockwork ROM?

Now that you know this, what do I have to do when the update comes out?

I actually thought it was out already, I do know it's out if I want to manually install it.

And what would happen if when it's available I do nothing and just let it happen. Do I end up with a bricked phone?

Thanks!

Alright, so you have a custom recovery. No big deal.

This just means you can not accept the over the air(ota) update. You will have to manually update.

Good news, you can do that now.

Just some questions to determine where to go from here.

What was your goal for rooting in the first place?

Do you want to run stock? Just superuser? Or do you like having clockworkmod?

Based on your previous posts, I would recommend just following this method: [ODIN][TAR] SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097 (EL29 Modem/Kernel/ROM - Full Restore - Rooted) - xda-developers
and make sure you select the "no data restore package" so you do not lose your data and applications. This method will restore you to the stock recovery so you will not have clockworkmod.

This will also put you back at stock with just superuser added and if you wanted you can delete applications or use rom toolbox(same thing you did before). If you don't make those additional changes you will be able to accept the next OTA and just lose root.

Alright, so you have a custom recovery.

So are you saying that I did in the end, end up with a custom ROM?

Ok, I think you want me to revert back to stock until either the update comes out, or I install it now since it's available now for the brave at heart (and of course develops who understand this stuff much better than I do).

I'm going to look at the link you sent me.

Also, I don't think you answered my question.

What does happen if the OTA version gets installed or attempts it?

Does that brick my phone?

Remember, I'm coming from WebOS, where you could never brick a phone.

You just wiped it and install a new complete version on an empty phone.

I do miss the ez of WebOS.

Thanks for working with me, if I haven't said it yet, the help is appreciated!

Rob:)

I don't think you were on a custom rom just a custom kernel.

That link I posted is exactly what sprint will push out. It is stock but also has root which is all you need for what you were doing.

If you accept an ota, it will likely fail and not install. If it does accept and install then you could brick or at least have data corruption. Although I think it is more than likely it will fail, why take the risk?

I'm having trouble downloading the package.

Did you do it via 'multi' or 'mirror'?

And which site did you use to get the download going?

I don't trend to like those sites.

Rob

I did finally manage to get the two versions downloaded.

I.e. get I.have to follow the steps that are listed on the website from the link you gave me.

I need to find the time to perform those steps.

I will report back when I accomplish that.
