I had an S2 that stopped recognizing a charged battery. I could power it up and as soon as the Sprint logo screen appeared it would shut down. It would display gray dead battery but if you held the power button for a sec it showed the actual green fully charged battery. Worked OK as long as plugged into the wall but died the instant you unplugged it. Put in a new battery, no change. Took it to Sprint store and they said too bad, you need a new phone. Replaced the 2 year old S2 with a new S3. The S3 is now 2 years old and just died. It is doing EXACTLY the same thing. It does not recognize the fully charged battery, thinks the battery is dead. Works fine plugged in but dies the instant you unplug it. Will turn back on but shut down as soon as the Sprint logo splash ends. What gives??? :(

Welcome to Android Central! Although you said that trying a new battery didn't help with the older S2, did you try a new battery with the S3? It's still very possible that your current battery died. A quick way to tell is to remove the battery, place it flat on a table, and try to spin it. If it spins freely, it's bulging in the middle, which is a bad sign. But even if it doesn't spin, it's worth trying a new battery.
