Called Sprint last night and (eventually) had them submit a "case" to the"back office". According to this xda thread - Sprint SIM Unlock - xda-developers - that's promising. Sounds like Sprint was initially using Apple software, thinking they were unlocking phones when they really weren't succeeding. Since early June, they have a new system which sounds like it actually works. In my case, I'm having to argue that being a Sprint customer for >10 years trumps the 90-day rule. Fortunately, my trip overseas will occur after the 90 days anyway.

UPDATE: Got the Sprint email today that I'm unlocked. Now to shop for a SIM card to activate . . .

Got the overseas SIM card today, and, lo and behold, my phone recognized it (No locked message) and asked for which of the list of carriers! Will activate the SIM when closer to departure. Yay!

You can have Sprint unlock you for International use only. You have to call them.

Question about the SIM card - from what I understand its only purpose is to connect to the 4G network. So is it required for phone activation and voice calls/texting? Also, are the SIMs tied to the user's account like with GSM SIMs, or will it connect as long as it has any Sprint SIM inside?

Update.... I posted earlier as purchasing the phone outright (ouch..$600+ out the door) near launch day. They would not unlock even with this setup until 90 days had passed. Well, it is over 90 days and it was pretty easy to get it unlocked. Used Chat on sprint.com...they directed me to international. Mine changed within a couple of minutes, they initially balked on my son's ONE that he also purchased outright about 30 days ago. But even that came through approved within a couple of hours..

I just moved to Mexico on a Temp assignment and brought my HTC One from Sprint. Sprint won´t unlock your phone for the first 90 days even when you have been with them for 10 years. Finally the phone was unlock by Sprint after 90 days and bought a Telcel Sim Card and it is working but the Data plan is not working on 4G only GSM which is really slow and by the way the phone needs to be in the US for the unlock to be update.

My phone was unlock by Sprint and I am using a Sim card from another carrier in Mexico but the data is only working on GSM. I called Sprint for help and they actually cleaned their hands and advise it is something that needs to be fix by the carrier in Mexico which is not too much help

How many times you going to post that? Lol :P. The carrier you are using is obviously GSM and that's the only reason it's working on that setting.

Does the carrier you are on use the same lte bands as the phone supports? How about 3g?

You can usually look that stuff up on wikipedia.

I spent 10 days in the Philippines earlier this month and can give a few insights at how this works on the HTC One:

    - Purchased the phone and renewed my contract late May. Had to wait 90 days for the unlock (inadvertently called Sprint Care 2 days before my 90th day to try to unlock the phone, International put my request through but the "approval" email did not come through until the 91st day activated)
    - Went to UICC Unlock in Settings -> System Updates and updated my phone for unlocking
    - Upon arriving in the Philippines, had to be setup with a prepaid micro-SIM
    - Was able to get 2G and 3G coverage in the Philippines. As expected, did not get LTE in the country as their LTE bands weren't compatible with Sprint's version of the HTC One

So, in short, don't expect LTE usage internationally with the Sprint version of the HTC One, even using a local SIM, as Sprint's LTE frequency and band are really only found in the US.

I bought a One in June. Within a week it became obvious I had been given a handset with a bad battery and I took it back to Best Buy for a replacement. While the guy was doing the setup on the replacement he took the SIM card out of the bad handset, dropped it into a tiny ziplock bag and gave it me. He said don't loose this because it's like gold. So, it's been sitting on my desk for the last 5 months and I have no idea what to do with it. Is it really worth anything? Can I sell it or should I hold on to it?

I too have a Sprint HTCOne and traveled to Colombia...I had to get my phone "unlocked" making it a worldwide phone and using any sim card from any carrier, foreign or domestic. These phones are locked to the carrier you bought the phone from and need to be "unlocked" your carrier will unlock your phone for you if you ask them to. Good luck.
