I'm using root explorer. I mount as R/W and can't see that file under etc. I even did a search for it and nothing. But I'm thinking that's ok, as I was searching xda for help I came across a good point
Yep i just wanted to make sure you were using an explorer that allows browsing on /system. As i state in post #1, some phones have this, others don't.

I checked the file - it didn't have zip, I just thought it did because its formatted with zip. There was nothing
behind it, so I modified by adding .img as you said it should be.

Put phone in fastboot mode with 2 fingers, plugged in with Android Guy, mostly white lettering, cmd and typed exactly what you said.

It comes back "System can't fine the path identified"

Typed second line and got "fastboot is not recognize as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch file."

I read somewhere about path, going in and changing environmental areas in systems, checked all drivers,
downloaded SDK Mgr, Recover.crespo, Superuser (on card), needed a Java, and PDANet. Added AdbWinApi.dll (downloaded and placed in Tools) because it kept coming back last night that this was missing (several instances all over). Downloaded fastboot (app .exe) which does nothing andd recovery file (shows zip but is .img) This was gathered off of Modaco and xda. Some might be for Mac or TMobile phones, so dont know if I have put something somewhere in the wrong place.

I really, really appreciate your followup to my questions, but I'm tired of this and going golfing, will look tomorrow to see if there are any better ideasl.

Why would it be waiting for a device? Did you type adb shell or something? You don't need a shell.

Took a couple tries but got everything working and just applied the netarchy kernel. This is more complex than hacking webos, but i'm already drooling at all the new options that are available to play with

How did you get recovery working? Somehow I missed that even with renaming the thing through root explorer

Now that you renamed install-recovery.sh, go back and put the custom recovery back on. This time it will stick. When you rebooted, install-recovery.sh replaced your custom recovery

This caught me too, not sure if I misread the instructions the first time or just got ahead of myself.

So, I've got the drivers. adb reboot bootloader works, but fastboot oem unlock just says waiting for devices. Still having the same problem.

[warn]If you dont do this next step your custom recovery will not be sticky and you'll have to apply it every time you reboot. Not all phones have this file but if your does, you need to do this step[/warn]
-Download root explorer from the market
    -Open and grant SU permission
    -Drive to system/etc
-Mount as RW (upper right hand corner of screen)
-Long press on install-recovery.sh and rename to install-recovery.sh.bak
    .

when i go to system/etc and click mount as RW i dont find "install-recovery.sh" anywhere in that list?

I did flash the recvery and ran it with no problems just cant find it to rename

OK, I'll bite since nobody else has, what have you done to remedy the problem?

Attemtped driver reinstalls several times, rebooted the phone several times. I'm not sure what else to do. Windows sees the phone. there's no issue there.

With the phone in fastboot, Type fastboot devices into the CMD line, does your phone come back?
