Perhaps the issue is that most users will be switching between 3g and 4g coverage, at least initially. Making that seamless may require not allowing simultaneous use, at least at first.
The good people over at Engadget said today that the EVO will use the CDMA radio for voice, which would leave WiMAX radio free to do data. This is the theory of how it will work. This all assumes you have both 4G and 3G coverage at the same time.
As of right now, no, but some have hinted that it may be up and working at launch. Technically, its possible. GSM phones have two separate antennas, one for voice, one for data. CDMA phones have 1 antenna for both. The evo has 1 antenna for voice and 3g/1x data and another antenna for 4G(wimax) so its possible. As of right now, Sprint is saying they are still testing the possibilities. Regardless you will only be able to do it in 4G service areas once it is possible.
It wouldn't be tricky at all. The phone is always 3G, it never actually goes over wimax so if you lose the 4G, you'd never lose the call and the two would never interfere with each other. And if there's no 4G, then everything goes as normal - data over 3G with no call, no data if on a call. Nothing tough about that. It can all be done with about 5 lines of code.
As for customers, that's easily handled with a small alert icon (unintrusive like webos please) that tells you: "No 4G, cannot get data connection until phone call ends or you reenter a 4G area."

HTC Evo 4G Will Do Voice & Web Surf Over 4G Free
We could have some good news for those interested in the HTC Evo 4G. Our source has just informed us that his contact at Sprint has given new information on the 4G's capabilities.
According to the source, Sprint will allow VOIP calls and web surfing simultaneously via their 4G network. Furthermore, the 4G data plan would be free in the beginning for Sprint customers who opt for their 2 year contract plan when buying the phone. The reason behind this is that since 4G coverage is still not 100 percent in the US, Sprint may hold back on charging customers for a while.
Dan from Sprint also mentioned that more about the HTC Evo 4G will be revealed on 12th May. While we all got the flyers for Sprint's Prince Of Persia Evo 4G afterparty, very few us got an invite. So it looks like the Web will be hit with all the juicy bits from Sprint's launch the very next day. Do check back with us on May 13 for Sprint's full disclosure on the HTC Evo 4G.
You will be able to be on a phone call and surf the web. Calls get turned into VOIP.
Yeah that article just doesn't make any sense. The EVO only uses CDMA for voice calls. Unless Sprint gets a Skype app or similar, there's no VoIP. Some day in the future of 4G all voice calls will be voice that's transparent to the user (in the way Vonage is) but that won't happen for a while.
Not true. Voice will only go over CDMA, not WiMAX. The only way the EVO may be capable of simultaneous voice and data is for voice to go over CDMA while data goes over WiMAX.
