Tried to update - now Kies won't recognize phone & automatically powers on

I tried to update my Captivate to official 2.2. I did everything right as far as downloading downloading Kies mini, putting in debugging mode, etc. I got hung up on the Odin downloading "Do not remove from target!!!" screen and left it there overnight.

I got up and checked again and noticed that windows had some updates for me to download so I figured maybe those were drivers that I needed to complete that step of the update process and downloaded them. I continued to try and let it download for about 15 minutes but had to leave so I disconnected.

I came back home to try again and now I've noticed that the phone automatically powers up when I plug it into the charger - it never did this before. I cannot get it to return to the Odin downloading screen anymore while in debugging mode and holding the up/down volume keys and plugging in in to USB.

I was on the phone with ATT for nearly two hours and didn't get anywhere. We even did a hard reset back to factory and I still get the "USB device not recognized" pop up when I plug the phone into the computer. When I click on the USB dialog box and click "Unknown device" for the USB port I have the phone plugged into, it says that no drivers for the device are installed. I was told to contact Samsung but I want to see if I can get some advice here first since Samsung is closed on Sundays. Any help and guidance is appreciated.

I'm not sure, but I've heard that some people have had driver issues and it worked.

Download the drivers from the bottom of this post:

Ok I'll give that a try, how do I know if I need 64 or 32 bit?

BTW, is there a cleaner site to download from? I clicked on the 64bit link and it immediately puled up my computers library history and all sorts of pop ups came through. That was a little scary.

Do you have 64 or 32 bit Windows? I'm not sure how to tell.

Really? I thought I had the official Samsung link up. I'll look into it, thanks.

I'm just running Windows XP home edition so that's probably 32 right?

Yeah I think so.

The links are just Mediafire, which I've never had a problem with (other than a few popups, but nothing malicious). I just opened it no problem. You can get them off Samsung's site, too.

this is unbelievable. i just downloaded the drivers(actually a box popped up saying that the drivers already existed but I went ahead and reinstalled them anyway) and my phone is still not recognized. Doesn't matter what USB port I plug into.

I tried to put the phone on mass storage mode just to see if the computer would recognize it in that simple fashion but I still got the "USB device not recognized" message. WTH is going on. I thought the full factory reset would have taken care of things.

I can't believe the horrible software makes me suggest this every time, but do you have another computer you can try?

Sorry I just got back home. YES, I though about that also and I may just have to take that route on a friends computer. I will probably contact Samsung and let them walk me through things before I do that, though.

Hi...I just recently downloaded the new 2.2 to my Captivate... and finally got it to work. (And... YOU SHOULD NOT BE USING 64-BIT. USE ONLY 32 BIT. 64-bit will cause problems.:D) Initially, even though I did everything right, and it looked like the software was downloading, towards the end of the download, I would get an error message that said something to the effect of the software could not be updated. Very frustrating. You should try downloading from the Samsung site that they recommend... hope you are doing this. Also, while in debugging mode, DO NOT ALSO UNMOUNT YOUR SD CARD! I know that some instructions say to do this, however, the download server uses the card as a buffer for the download... it is attempting to "cache" the Froyo software when it runs out of room where it normally downloads and in trying to set up the new program. The best time to do this download is late at night when no one else is doing it. I finally got through to the server when it was in a "lull" (not too many people trying to access it) and the download took 15 minutes! No loss of data, no problems with anything. And, remember to change the USB from debugging back to normal.

Good Luck! Enjoy the new 2.2 - it is really great... much faster and way better new features!

Also, I contacted AT&T customer support; they now have Android Specialists onboard, and they really do know Android! Yay... finally! Once they knew that I had a pretty good understanding of how software and hardware worked, they immediately explained what was happening in the download and let me know thatm Yes, the software download needed the SD card to be mounted. This is why they tell you to back up your stuff.

I have been using the new system for a week now and it is well worth the wait!

I might try re-downloading from the Samsung site but i somehow doubt it will make a difference.

With the SD card, I don't even have an SD card installed, just running off internal memory.

Yes, the ATT people were knowledgeable but even they couldn't help. I can't wait to figure out what the hell is missing to make the phone recognized. I should have known it would be frustrating for me after over 6 months of frustration just waiting. I should have just rooted a long time ago but I'm still hoping I can get get this figured out.
